Northwest Church Homeless Outreach

Serving in the Snow

Team: Korey, Peggy, Steve, Dan Y., Daniel D., Kathryn, Linda

Total Team Members: 7

We headed out into a cold, snowy evening, loading the van with food and essentials, ready to meet people where they were.

Woodmont Library – Des Moines

The library was closed. Snow was falling steadily, and one man stood alone under the awning. His name was Shawn. He was simply trying to stay dry. At first, he declined prayer—but when asked if we could pray over his life for protection, he agreed. We prayed that God would provide for him and bring him into a place of stability, especially housing. After giving him food and essentials, we moved on.

Calvary Lutheran Church – 320th St

Instead of following our usual route, Korey felt led to come here first. It became one of the most impactful stops of the night.

Jo Jo shared about deep loss—his fiancĂ© and son were both taken from him in a tragic plane crash. Despite the weight of grief, his faith in the Lord remained strong. He also shared a desire for reconciliation with family. We prayed with him for comfort, healing, and restoration, and stayed to listen as he opened up.

Glen spoke openly about frustration with the younger generation and how much things have changed. He was clearly agitated, but willing to engage. Kathryn prayed with him, asking for peace over his life.

Alice received food and essentials.

Nicole, a Native woman in her forties, was grieving the loss of her brother from September 2025. As she shared, she began to cry. She spoke about wanting to get off meth, find shelter, and not feel like a burden to her family—even though they want her to come home. Peggy shared from her own experience of loss. Linda shared about losing four of her children, including one just last year. There was a real moment of understanding. Korey joined the conversation and reminded Nicole that God loves her unconditionally. He asked if she believed that—she said yes, and expressed that she wanted help in her life.We prayed for her together—asking for healing, freedom, and direction. She had already received food and essentials, and we were able to give her warm socks. She had a tender heart, and it was clear God was moving.

316th / Walmart (“Home Home”)

We met Terry, a senior living in an older trailer he’s working to improve. He shared about trying to restore his credit and improve his financial situation, along with ideas he hopes to pursue. We prayed for provision, stability, and direction. He declined food but received essentials.

Safeway – 320th & Pacific Hwy

Richard shared about severe physical trauma—he had been beaten and left for dead. He now lives with lasting effects, including a tracheotomy and head injury. We prayed for healing and provided food and essentials.

Leroy received prayer and essentials.

Debrief

We returned to Northwest Church, unloaded the van, and spent time in prayer. We thanked God for His protection and for every opportunity to serve. We prayed for those we encountered—that they would find warmth, shelter, and hope in the middle of harsh conditions. Despite the snow, cold, and wind, the team persevered. God was faithful through every conversation, every prayer, and every moment.
